Carer Visas (SC 116 & SC 836)

These are permanent resident visas available for people:
- Who want to care for a relative in Australia with long-term or permanent medical condition, or
- To help a relative take care of a member of their family with long-term or permanent medical condition
Applicants can lodge a:
- Sub Class 116 – Carer visa application while off-shore
- Or a Sub Class 836 – Carer Visa application while in Australia (onshore) on a visa that does not have a condition 8503 – No further Stay.
The relative with the medical condition:
- Be an Australian citizen, Permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen
- Must have been assessed as needing care by a Health Service provider
- Cannot get the care they need from another source in Australia
Applicant Requirements
- Must be a relative of the person with long-term or permanent medical condition.
- Applicant must be sponsored by a Australian relative over the age of 18 years who is a citizen, permanent resident or eligible New Zealand citizen.
- The relative with above medical condition has been assessed by Australian Visa Medical Service assessor as meeting the requirement for ongoing care
- The above relative cannot reasonably get such care from any other relative or service provider in Australia.
- Applicant understands fully well the type of care needed; is willing and able to provide substantial and continuing assistance.
- Applicant (and their family members) meet the health and character requirements.
Australian Government only issues a very limited number of Carer Visas every year
Care Visa Holder – Rights
- Both SC 116 and SC 836 are permanent resident visas allowing the holder to live in Australia indefinitely.
- Applicants own, family unit members can also be granted this visa.
- Holders can study, work, enroll in Medicare and apply for Australian citizenship.
- The holder can travel to and from Australia for up to 5 years. After this period, they may have to apply for a resident-return visa to re-enter Australia (unless they have become an Australian citizen)
