Fuctional English

An applicant can provide evidence of Functional English in one of the following ways:

  • Citizens and passport holders of UK, USA, Canada, New Zealand and Ireland are deemed to meet the Functional English requirement automatically.
  • Evidence of completing primary school and at least 3-year of secondary school education where all instructions were in English.
  • Evidence of completing at least 5-years of secondary education where all instructions were in English.
  • Successfully completed 1-year of full-time study (or equivalent part-time study) leading to a degree, higher degree, diploma, associate diploma in an Australian institution where all instructions were in English.
  • Successfully completed 2-year of full-time study (or training) leading to a degree, higher degree, diploma, trade certificate in an overseas institution where all instructions were in English.
  • An assessment of Functional English from a service provider of the Adult Migrant English Program (AMEP)
  • A Test score as listed below in one of the approved English language tests completed within 12 months of visa application lodgment or while visa is being processed.
    • IELTS score of at least 4.5 average
    • TOEFL iBT total band score of at least 32
    • PTE Academic overall band score of at least 30
    • CAE Test band score of at least 147
