Parent Residency Visas
Parents of:
- Australian citizens
- Australian Permanent residents settled in Australia
- Eligible New Zealand citizens living in Australia
Are eligible to apply for Australian Permanent residence if they meet:
- The Balance of Family Test, and
- Are sponsored by one of their child settled in Australia
Types of Parent Visa
Parent visas – which may take significantly long period of 20-30 years to process:
Contributory Parent visas– involves paying significantly high fees, and has current processing time of about 3 years:
- Contributory Parent Visa (SC 143)
- Contributory Parent Visa - Temporary (SC 173)
- Contributory Aged Parent Visa (SC 864)
- Contributory Aged Parent Visa - Temporary (SC 884)
Definition – Balance of Family Test (BoF)
To meet the Balance of Family test for a parent visa, the applicant should have:
- Either half their children living in Australia permanently;
- Or, the number of children living in Australia Permanently is more than any other single country.
Children living in Australia permanently are:- Australian citizens
- Australian Permanent residents who are usually resident in Australia
- Eligible New Zealand citizens who are normally resident in Australia
- All children, including step children and adopted children of both parents count towards the BoF Test.
- Children not counted towards BoF test are deceased, removed from parent’s legal custody and a few other exceptions applicable in case of refugees and people living under persecution.
