Working holiday visa (SC 462) is a temporary visa aimed at encouraging cultural exchange and allowing young people to have an extended holiday in Australia.

There is an annual limit to the number of Work and Holiday Visas issued to passport holders of each eligible country. (most nationals can check the number of places available for nationals from their country by contacting the Australian missions in their country)

Visa Eligibility

  • Once-in-a-life visa for young people from eligible countries to holiday and work in Australia 
  • No accompanying dependent child or partner 
    (partner may apply separately on their own).
  • Meet Educational requirements (based on nationality of passport holder)
  • Provide evidence of Functional English
  • Have a letter of Support from their government 
    (except Israel, China, Singapore and US citizens)
  • Meet the Health and Character requirements
  • Must have sufficient funds to live (approx. A$ 5000) and to purchase a ticket to leave Australia.
  • Initial visa valid for 12 months.
    • can also apply for a second working holiday visa for further stay up to 12 months, if they complete 3 months of specified work in regional Australia while on their first working holiday visa and have not breached any visa conditions on their previous visa.

Visa holder obligations

  • Allowed to stay in Australia for 12 months from date of first entry
  • Can leave and re-enter Australia any number of times during validity of visa.
  • Can work with a single employer for a max of 6 months only (full-time, part-time or casual)
    • Can however be employed with same labour hire agency but working in a different business.
  • Can study for a max of 4 months only
  • Must maintain health Insurance, if not covered under reciprocal health care agreement with Australia
