Temporary Work Visas
Australian businesses employ many overseas workers, on Temporary Work Visas.
The most common Temporary work visa is:
Australian businesses facing skill shortage of workers in specific occupations can employ overseas workers for a specified duration using this visa category. This new TSS visa replaces the older well know SC 457 Visa used to employ skilled overseas workers by Australian businesses in the past.
The new regime of TSS visa allows for 3 different streams of workers under:
1. The short-term stream
- for occupations in the Short-term skilled occupation list (STSOL)
- for a maximum of 2 years,
- with a possibility of extension one more period of 2 years,
- but no pathway to permanent residency.
2. The medium-term stream
- for occupations in the Medium and long-term strategic skills list (MLTSS)
- for a maximum of 4 years,
- with the possibility of permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Stream
3. The Labour agreement stream
- for businesses who have entered into a labour agreement with the government to employ overseas workers in certain specified occupations

Besides the above Temporary work visa, there are a few other temporary visas which allow for overseas workers to work in Australia. These visas, however, have limitations on eligibility based on the nationality of applicant, age and other factors as detailed under each visa details:
