Health and Character requirements

Health requirements

Permanent visas

All applicants (including immediate family members of the applicant) will need to complete and the Medical Examination and meet the Health requirements as prescribed by the Dept of Home Affairs before a Permanent visa is granted.

The Medical examinations for a Permanent residency visa is more detailed and stringent than for a Temporary visa.

Even if a dependent family member of an applicant has not been included in the application and/or does not intend to travel to Australia, they would still need to meet the health requirements as prescribed. (exemptions may apply)

For most Permanent residency visa applications; the failure to meet the health requirements by one family member may result in a refusal of the entire application.

For certain Permanent residency application (mainly onshore applications), there may be Health waiver applicable for the applicants.

For more details regarding Medical Examinations and Health waiver, please contact eMA by purchasing a MAP.

Temporary visas

Some Temporary visas may not require a medical examination (especially visas for short durations).

Most Temporary work visas do require a Medical examination, and applicants and family members must meet the prescribed Health requirements before a visa is granted.

Visa Medicals for Temporary visa applications are not as comprehensive as that of a Permanent resident visa.

Unlike a Permanent visa, secondary/dependent applicants of the primary applicant, who do not intend to travel to Australia, do not need to meet the Health requirements.

Character requirements

Permanent visas

Primary applicant and all dependent family members above the age of 16 years must apply and provide relevant penal clearance certificates from every country they have lived for more than 12 months in the preceding 10 years (after turning 16 years).

This requirement applies to every dependent family member of the primary applicant over 16 years of age – even if they do not intend to travel or live in Australia.

Minors (below 16 years) do not need to provide a Penal clearance evidence.

Temporary visas

Most Temporary visa applicants do not require to provide Penal clearance certificates unless specifically requested by the Dept of Home Affairs.

From July 2018, all Temporary work visa applicants and their secondary applicants (except minors) will also need to provide Penal clearance certificates from every country they have lived in the last 10 years for over 12 months (since turning 16 years).
